Cadore BL, Italy

In the 1950s, forward-thinking executive Enrico Mattei, head of ENI, Italy’s state oil company, wanted to create a mountain retreat in the Italian Alps where his employees and their families could spend summer and winter vacation. Architect Edoardo Gellner drew up plans for Corte di Cadore, a resort near Cortina that included nearly 300 chalets, two hotels, a church and a camp where children of ENI staff could pass their holidays. Gellner designed everything down to the furniture for the modernist village and Mattei insisted apartments were to be assigned at random so top-level managers might find themselves lodged next door to refinery workers.
